More soaking time results in less cooking time on the stove. Then cover partially and let it simmer on low-medium till dal gets soft. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer with the lid partially covered. Split skinned chickpeas is bengal gram and are known as chana dal in Indian language.

Instructions to make Chana dal curry:
  1. Soak chana dal for about 30 minutes. - Add tomatoes, garlic, ginger, greenchilli and salt to blender.
  2. Make a puree out of it. In a non stick pressure cooker, heat oil and add onion, saute till they turn golden brown colour.
  3. Add the soaked chana dal and salt, saute for 4 minutes. Add turmeric powder and saute it for another 4 minutes.
  4. Add the tomato puree and greenchilli. Add 1/4 cup water, coriander powder and red chilli powder.
  5. Cover the pressure cooker and cook till 4 - 5 whistle.
  6. Once the whistle are done, simmer the dal for 15 minutes.
  7. Add chopped coriander leaves and mix well. - Serve hot with steamed rice or chapathi. - Enjoy!
