  1. Get 1 cup Green Gram
  2. Prepare 1 tsp Cumin seeds
  3. Prepare 2 Onions (chopped)
  4. Take 1 inch Ginger (chopped)

  6. Get 2 chilies Green (chopped)
  7. Get 2 Tomatoes (chopped)
  8. Get 1 tsp Turmeric powder
  9. Prepare 2 tsps Chili powder
  10. Prepare 2 tsps Coriander powder
  11. Get 1 tsp Cumin powder
  12. Get 1 tbsp Lemon juice
  13. Take to taste Salt
  14. Get 2 tbsps Oil
  15. Get 2 - 3 cups Water (accordingly)
  16. Make ready handful Coriander mint leaves or (chopped)

If I make a side veggie dish, I serve the dal with steamed rice or we just have it with rotis with a side veggie salad. Instructions to make Green Gram Dhal Curry:
  1. Wash the green gram under running cold water till water runs clear. Soak it in enough warm water for about 1 hour. After soaking, discard the water, add green gram to pressure cooker with salt.
  2. Then add 1 1/2 cups of water to the green gram. Close it with the lid, put the weight on, turn on the heat on high. Let it cook for 1 whistle on high + 10 mins on medium-low. Let the pressure go down by itself and then open the cover.
  3. While pressure is releasing, heat the oil in a pan on medium heat. Once hot add cumin seeds, let them sizzle.
  4. Then add chopped onions and saute till golden brown. And salt to speed up the process. To this add ginger, garlic and green chilies. Saute until raw smell disappears.
  5. Then add chopped tomatoes and mix. Cook for 1-2 minutes or until the tomatoes soften. Then add cumin powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder and red chili powder. Mix it well and cook for a minute or until the oil separates.
  6. Then add the cooked green gram and 3/4 cups of water. Mix well and let it simmer for 4-5 minutes. You can adjust the consistency by adding more water or boiling the extra water as per your preference.
  7. Turn off the stove and then add lemon juice. Garnish with mint leaves or coriander leaves. Mix well and it is ready to serve with rice or chapati.

Switch off and serve hot with. Whole moong dal/mung bean curry south indian style. Lentils and rice make perfect lunches. I never came across whole green gram in south indian recipes that I had so far in south indian restaurants. So Green gram dal fry has now become a common side dish at home.
