The ingredients needed to make Meen Peera:
  1. Prepare 1/2 kg fish like Kozhuva -
  2. Take 1 1/2 cups Coconut scrapped -
  3. Prepare 3 Kodumpuli -
  4. Make ready 10 Shallots -

  6. Prepare 6 Green chillies -
  7. Get 1 tsp chillies Crushed red -
  8. Get 1 tsp Turmeric powder -

  10. Prepare 1 1/2 tbsps Coconut oil -
  11. Take to taste Salt

Meen peera; meen pattichathu is an everyday fish curry where fresh fish is cooked with fresh coconut scrapings, along with "kudampuli" or fish tamarind.and lightly drizzled with fresh coconut oil. Meen Peera is a popular dish belonging to the Christian households of Central Kerala. Traditionally meen peera is made with Netholi or anchovies but any small fish should serve fine too. Meen peera "Fish stir fry with coconut" is an exclusive Kerala fish curry.

Instructions to make Meen Peera:
  1. Clean the fish and marinate with 1/2 a lemon or 1 tbsp vinegar.after 15-20 minutes wash it with water and drain.
  2. Meanwhile split the kodumpuli and soak in 1/2 cup hot water.Crush the shallots,garlic,green chillies & curry leaves.
  3. In an earthenware/steel vessel put the crushed items,coconut scrapped,turmeric,chillies,salt and mix together with your hand.
  4. Add the fish and the kodumpuli with water to this and mix again.
  5. Heat the stove & place the vessel on it.Cover with a lid & cook on medium heat.
  6. After 5 minutes open the lid and toss the curry by holding both sides with mittens.If you r not familiar with this,just use a spoon to turn the curry.cover the lid and cook till all the water dries.adjust salt.
  7. Off the stove and add the coconut oil & close the lid.after 2 minutes remove the lid and stir with a spoon.your Meen Peera is ready to serve.
  8. U can make this with sardines,chemmen & squid rings also.

Traditionally meen peera is made with Netholi or anchovies but any small fish should serve fine too. Meen peera "Fish stir fry with coconut" is an exclusive Kerala fish curry.
