  23. Take 1 pinch asafoetida

Steps to make Tamarind Rice:
  1. Wash and soak rice for 1 hr. Pressure cook rice with 2 cups of water and 1/2 teaspoon of salt for 1 whistle. Remove the cooked rice in a big plate and allow it cool.
  2. Take tamarind in a bowl add water and soak it for 1/2 hr. Then squeeze the soaked tamarind and extract the pulp, strain it and keep aside.
  3. Heat a pan and add all the whole spices mentioned under the list title 'spice powder' except asafoetida. Roast till the urad dal and chana dal become golden, then switch off the flame and add asafoetida/hing. Cool it and grind it to form fine powder.
  4. Now heat sesame oil in a pan and fry peanuts in it and keep aside.
  5. In remaining oil for tempering add all the whole spices and pulses, when pulses becomes golden brown add asafoetida, turmeric powder and curry leaves. Now add tamarind pulp and salt. Cook till mixture has thickened a bit and you see oil floating on top.
  6. Now add grounded dry powder and cook for a while. Switch off the flame and add rice, mix well.
  7. Add fried peanuts and serve hot.
